The Minister for Innovation, Services and Small Business of the Australian State of Victoria, Louise Asher, has announced that legislation will be introduced to the Victorian Parliament this week to allow regional councils to nominate either one full day or two half-day public holidays as substitutes for Melbourne Cup Day.
The aforementioned legislation will mean that it will be neigh impossible for anyone to know which parts of the state of Victoria will be on holiday on the day of the Melbourne Cup as each municipality and shire will be able to observe it or another day or 2 other half-days.
Three years ago (2008-08-16), the Victoria State government introduced the Public Holidays Amendment Bill 2008 to compensate regional Victorians in 28 regional councils which did not heretofore observe the Melbourne Cup public holiday or offer an alternative paid day off.
