A group of Chilean parliamentarians has tabled legislation that would turn the upcoming, September 19, public holiday into a "feriado irrenunciable".

The aforementioned change would essentially impact the opening of stores and shopping centers (called Malls in Chile) and this was the very issue which was side-stepped last year (2010-07-19) when Chilean President, Sebastián Piñera, signed Law 20.450 which declared Friday and Monday, September 17 and 20, 2010, as additional public holidays, but only on the condition that the final bill stipulate that the only day when retail stores would close was Saturday, September 18, 2010 (2010-07-07).
