The government of Indonesia has issued a decree (Surat Keputusan Bersama tentang Hari Libur Nasional dan Cuti Bersama 2012) designating public holidays and collective leave days for the calendar year 2012, for both the private and public sectors.
The aforementioned decree is enshrined in the Ministry of Religious Affairs decree N º 7 of 2011, the decree No. 04/MEN/VII/2011 of the Indonesian Ministry of Manpower and Transmigration, and the decree SKB/03/M/PAN-RB/07/2011 of the Ministry of Administrative Reform, designates 5 additional days of joint leave (Cuti Bersama) in addition to the annual public holidays (Hari Libur Nasional).
The Cuti Bersama were introduced after the 2002 Bali bombings (2002-11-07) to promote internal tourism as a means to compensate diminishing foreign tourism. The number of these additional public holidays rose from 3 in 2002 to 6 in 2008 (2007-05-31), but then later in 2008, the number of these was sharply reduced (2008-02-05), although last year's (2010-06-15) and this year's announcements now bring the total of Cuti Bersama close to the pre-2008 counts.
Note that the aforementioned announcement contains some erroneous dates and that we can soon expect a revised list of official public holidays in Indonesia.
