Paraguay May 14 Public Holiday Update

A committee of historians, headed by Paraguay's Minister of Culture, Ticio Escobar, has called on Paraguay's President to support the Senate bill which would change the date of the May 15, Independence Day, public holiday to May 14th.

This follows last year's declaration of May 14 as a regional public holiday (2010-05-13), and the recently passed Senate bill to restore the February 3, Saint Blas, public holiday as well as declare May 14 as a new public holiday (2010-12-21).

The aforementioned proposals would move the annual public holiday from May 15 to May 14 (and not create a new public holiday as the Senate bill would). It would also move the annual Mother's Day celebration (not a public holiday) from its annual fixed date of May 15 to the 3rd or 4th Sunday of May, to avoid this family celebration interfering with the May 15 (or 14) patriotic public holiday.

A special session of Parliament is expected to be convened to discuss these proposed changes to the Ley 08/90.
