The government of Syrian President, Bashar al-Assad, has promised to make the Kurdish New Year's festival of Nayrouz into an annual national public holiday, starting in 2012.

Last year ( and 20-Mar-2010), Georgia's President, Mikheil Saakashvili, declared Sunday, March 21, 2010, an official non-working public holiday in Georgia, on account of that day's Nowruz, spring equinox, holiday, and similarly indicated that this could become an annual public holiday.
