The government of Timor Leste has announced that it had decided to grant a day-off public sector holiday on Friday, March 16, 2012, all day, to all employees and agents of the ministries or departments depending on them, as well as institutes and organizations included in indirect State administration.

As per the aforementioned announcement, the public holiday on Wednesday, February 22, 2012, is given to give enough time to those who reside far from their place of work to travel there to vote on March 17.

According to the Secretariat of State of the Council of Ministers of Timor Leste, this decision is based on law No.10/2005, which overhauled Timor Leste's public holidays (2005-08-12) and with Article 63 of the Constitution of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste establishing the citizens' political participation.
