Gambia's president, Yahya Jammeh, has announced that, effective today, the Gambian public sector weekend will be 3-day, from Friday to Sunday, inclusively, to "allow Gambians to devote more time to prayers, social activities and agriculture".
The aforementioned statement goes on to state that state schools will be closed on Fridays, but that they are free to open on Saturdays to compensate for the lost day.
President Jammeh (formally referred to as Sheikh Professor Alhaji Dr. Yahya AJJ Jammeh, GMRG, and Fellow of Australian Asia Institute for Civil Leadership) is known for his eccentricity, having once declared a one-off public holiday to coincide with the official naming ceremony of his newly born son (2007-12-30).
