The Kuwaiti Civil Service Commission has announced that, in the end, Wednesday, January 1, 2014, would be the only non-working public holiday for the upcoming Western New Year.

Earlier this month (2013-12-08), the Kuwaiti Civil Service Commission had announced that it had asked the Kuwaiti Council of Ministers to approve the CSC's decision to declare Thursday, January 2, 2014, as a one-off bridge public holiday in Kuwait, as January 1st falls on a Wednesday, in 2014. Apparently, this request was denied.

In the past, similar one-off western New Year public holidays were also declared by the Kuwaiti Civil Service Commission whenever January 1st occurred near (2011-12-22) or during (2010-11-26 and 2009-12-17) the Kuwaiti weekend (2007-08-04).
