The Suriname Raad van Ministers (Council of Ministers) has announced that Monday, July 1st, 2013, would be a one-off non-working public holiday throughout Suriname to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the emancipation of slaves (150 jaar Afschaffing van de Slavernij).

Last month (2013-06-02), the same Council of Ministers declared Wednesday, June 5, 2013, as a one-off non-working public holiday throughout Suriname to commemorate the 140th anniversary of the arrival of indentured "Hindustani" workers.

It is still unclear, yet, if the 160th anniversary of the arrival of Chinese indentured workers will also be marked by the declaration of a one-off non-working public holiday on October 20, 2013, as it was done 5 years ago for the 155th anniversary of the arrival of Chinese indentured workers (2008-09-19).
