The government of Timor Leste has announced that it had decided to grant an additional day-off public sector holiday for Ash Wednesday, on Wednesday, February 13, 2013, to to all employees of ministries, departments and State agencies including all State institutes and bodies, but this year only until 12:00 noon ("Toleránsia pontu iha loron 13 fulan Fevereiru tinan 2013, to'o oras 12").
As per the aforementioned announcement, the public holiday on Wednesday, February 13, 2013, is given as "Ash Wednesday is a solemn day of great importance for the Christian Community: it is the first day of Lent in the Catholic calendar that occurs forty days before Easter.".
Ash Wednesday was also declared a public sector holiday for the past 2 years (2012-02-17 and 2011-03-07), as were Holy Thursday and Easter Monday (2011-04-11).
According to the Secretariat of State of the Council of Ministers of Timor Leste, this decision is based on law No.10/2005, which overhauled Timor Leste's public holidays (2005-08-12) and last month's (2013-01-28) list of official public holidays in Timor Leste for the calendar year 2013.
