The government of Yemen has announced that the postponed change in the weekly days of rest (weekends) in Yemen, from the current Thursday/Friday to Friday/Saturday, would occur after the upcoming Eid al-Fitr public holidays.
Early last year (2012-01-09), the government of Yemen had announced that the weekly days of rest (weekends) would be changed from the current Thursday/Friday to Friday/Saturday. As per this announcement, Saturday, February 4, 2012, was to be the first Saturday off in Yemen, after which the new Friday/Saturday weekends would be the norm.
However, a month later (2012-02-01), the Yemeni Ministry of Civil Service and Insurance announced that the previously-announced change in weekends in Yemen, from Thursday/Friday to Friday/Saturday was postponed indefinitely.
Other Muslim countries have already changed from a Thursday/Friday weekend to a "semi-universal" Friday/Saturday weekend: the UAE (2006-05-31), Bahrain (2006-08-02), Kuwait (2007-08-04), Sudan (2008-01-09) and Algeria (2009-07-24), Oman (2013-04-06) and with Saudi Arabia being on track (2013-04-22), though the official date for the changeover has not been announced.
