Canada Names New NS Family Day Public Holiday

The Minister of Labour and Advanced Education of Canada's Province of Nova Scotia, Kelly Regan, has announced that the recently voted new annual February non-working public holiday in the Canadian Province of Nova Scotia, beginning in 2015, would be named "Heritage Day".

Over the past decade, while the Liberals were in opposition in the Nova Scotia legislature, they introduced a similar bill many times, and finally late last year (06-Dec-2013), the Minister of Labour and Advanced Education of Canada's Province of Nova Scotia, Kelly Regan, announced that her government has introduced another bill to declare a new annual "Family Day" non-working public holiday in the Canadian Province of Nova Scotia, beginning in 2015.

Two years ago (21-Apr-2011), a bill was introduced to the legislature of Canada's Province of Nova Scotia, which would have then created a new provincial non-working public holiday on the third Monday in February. At that time, the new annual non-working public holiday was to be named "Joseph Howe Day" and to be observed on the same date (and the same justification) as the Family Day public holiday long observed on the third Monday of February by the provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan, and since 2008 by Ontario and Manitoba (11-Oct-2007 and 26-Sep-2007) and later by the Province of Prince Edward Island (24-Apr-2009, 27-Nov-2008, 06-Apr-2008), and finally, most recently, in British Columbia (31-Jan-2013, 29-May-2012, 11-May-2012, 05-Oct-2011, and 03-Feb-2011), albeit on the second Monday of February, rather than the third Monday of February for all other provinces.

The new annual "Family Day" annual non-working public holiday in the Canadian Province of Nova Scotia, will begin in 2015, "giving employers one year to prepare for the new holiday", and would not be called "Family Day", as is the case in many other Canadian provinces, but rather honour a different person every year, as is done in some Caribbean countries for National Heroes' Day public holidays.
