Following the recent announcement that the National Holiday Office (NHS) was being shutdown, Cai Jiming, a professor at Beijing's Tsinghua University and a well-known member of the national committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, has conjectured that it is only a question of time before the Golden Week public holiday in China are scrapped.

Earlier this week (17-Sep-2014), China's General Office of the State Council had announced that the National Holiday Office (NHS), created in 2000, and tasked with the determination of China's annual non-working public holidays schedule, was being shutdown as a consequence of the public opinion backlash against its most recent overhaul of China's annual non-working public holidays system (11-Dec-2013, 27-Nov-2013, and 12-Oct-2013).

The NHS, headed by the director of the China National Tourism Administration, was a ministerial coordinating conference composed of members from 17 government ministries. Its responsibilities will be handed over to a "more senior group of officials".

The week long Golden Week public holidays system were instituted almost 15 years ago (20-Sep-1999), and amended once already, at the end of 2007, when the May Golden Week was shortened, to add the Tomb Sweeping Day and Mid-Autumn Festival public holidays in China (17-Dec-2007, 10-Dec-2007, 17-Nov-2007, and 09-Nov-2007).

The following year (10-Sep-2008), Professor Cai Jiming had further floated the idea that the October 1st, National Day, 3-day public holiday should be reduced to 1 day only to make room for 2 new, more traditional public holidays.
