Philippines Presidential Communications Operations Office Secretary, Sonny Coloma, has issued an official statement denying new rumours that Friday, August 22, 2014, had been, or would be, declared as an additional non-working public holiday in the Philippines, as it falls between the upcoming annual Ninoy Aquino Day non-working public holiday of the Philippines, and the weekend.
In its statement, Malacaρang referred to Proclamation No. 655, s. 2013, signed by President Benigno Aquino III, last year (30-Sep-2013), and which lists the special and regular non-working public holidays in the Philippines for the calendar year 2014.
The need for the Government of the Philippines to issue last-minute statements denying the declaration of day in lieu, or bridge, public holidays is common (21-Jul-2014, 08-Jun-2014, 24-Feb-2014, 23-Oct-2013, 27-Dec-2012, 12-Jul-2012, 03-Jun-2012 and 07-Mar-2012).
Under former president Macapagal-Arroyo, the concept of holidays economics had seen mid-week public holidays moved to adjoin a nearby weekend (25-Jul-2007).
