    ITAR-TASS (Moscow)

The Ministry of Labor of the Russian Federation has published a draft resolution of the Russian Government proposing a list of official public holidays and bridge holidays in Russia for the upcoming calendar year 2026.

The aforementioned draft О переносе выходных дней в 2026 году continues the trend of the past few years, whereby the practice of declaring bridge public holidays is maintained but, rather than compensating them with a working Saturday, they are compensated by the cancellation of the year's day in lieu public holidays.

As per Labor Minister, Anton Kotyakov, "The resolution on the transfer of days off that fall on holidays is adopted by the Government annually. The transfer is carried out in such a way as to optimally distribute the time of work and rest, if possible, to combine holidays and days off. Thanks to the transfer, the New Year holidays will last 12 days - from December 31, 2025 to January 11, 2026. Five times next year there will be three-day days off: in February, March, twice in May and on Russia Day in June".

The draft list of 2026 public holidays confirms the announcement, earlier this month, by Russian Minister of Labor, Anton Kotyakov, that December 31, 2026, would once again be a non-working public holiday in Russia.

  • Paraguay Bill To Allow For 3 Annual Last-Minute Public Holidays

Paraguay's Interior Minister, Enrique Riera, has introduced a bill that would add a public holiday on June 20 to commemorate the 1992 Constitutional Oath of Office, and more broadly to create up to three non-permanent holidays per year to celebrate special occasions.

The president of the republic could have the legal authority to declare up to three non-permanent holidays per year, in special situations such as sporting events, historical anniversaries, or to promote domestic tourism and national trade, if both houses of Congress approve it.

The Ley 1723 del 29 de junio de 2001 (Que Autoriza Al Poder Ejecutivo A Trasladar Los Feriados Nacionales Al Dia Lunes) gives the president of Paraguay the authority to move any, or all, mid-week public holidays to a nearby Monday (except New Year, Independence Day, día de La Virgen de Caacupé, Maundy Thursday and Good Friday), but declaring last-minute one-off public holidays is a more unwieldy process.

A brief hesitation to set the new Matari’i i Ni’a public holiday on the last Friday of November of each year, was dropped when French Polynesia's Conseil des Ministres realized, late last year, that this might conflict with Black Friday.

The President of Argentina, Javier Milei, has confirmed that the upcoming Independence Day public holiday would be observed mid-week on July 9, 2025, and would not be moved to adjoin a nearby weekend.

As per the aforementioned announcement, the only long weekends in 2025 are regulated by the Decree 1027/2024.

Recall that, last October, the government of Argentina published the Decreto 1027/2024, signed by Argentina's President, Javier Milei, and his Chief of Staff, Guillermo Francos, which declared 3 bridge public holidays in 2025 (días no laborables con fines turísticos), in addition to the list of annual public holidays of Argentina, as per the Ley N° 27.399.

However, contrary to what was the norm since the feriados con fines turísticos were established in the Decreto 1585/2010, these 3 days were declared as non-working days and not as holidays, so it is up to the employer to decide whether to work or not, except in the National Public Administration, Banks, Insurance and related activities, in which the observance of these 3 days is mandatory.
