After declaring Chinese Lunar New Year as a one-off non-working public holiday in Suriname in 2011, 2014 and 2015, the government of Suriname has amended its annual list of non-working public holidays in Suriname beginning with the calendar year 2015, by making Chinese Lunar New Year a new annual non-working public holiday in Suriname.

The aforementioned declaration of Chinese Lunar New Year as a new annual non-working public holiday in Suriname ("het Chinees Nieuwjaar voortaan zal zijn gelijkgesteld met de zondag, met alle daaraan verbonden rechtsgevolgen en gebruiken") was made by the Bouterse-Ameerali administration, after Chinese Lunar New Year had been as a one-off non-working public holiday in Suriname in 2011, 2014 and 2015 (2011-01-27, 2014-01-15, and 2014-03-17).

The government of Suriname has often announced new religious and ethnic public holidays, one-off or annual, in recent years (2014-11-17, 2014-10-20, 2014-07-25, 2013-10-14, 2013-06-02, 2013-03-22, 2010-11-24, 2010-11-13, 2010-10-30, and 2007-08-08).
