The Administrator of Australia's Indian Ocean Territories, Barry Haase, has signed the "Community Bulletin A17/2016 and Gazette 03-2016 for the Cocos (Keeling) Islands" which officially changes the date of the upcoming annual bank holiday and public holiday in the Cocos (Keeling) Islands for the observance of Hari Raya Puasa (the End of Ramadan).

The aforementioned change of date for the 2016 bank holiday and public holiday in the Cocos (Keeling) Islands for the observance of Hari Raya Puasa (the End of Ramadan), from July 7 to July 6, 2016 ("The Indian Ocean Territories Administration have received a formal request from Mr Aindil Minkom (Imam on Cocos (Keeling) Islands) requesting observance of Hari Raya Puasa on Wednesday, 06 July 2016"), thus amends the terms of the "Community Bulletin A39/2015 and Gazette 04-2015 for Cocos (Keeling) Islands", released last summer (2015-08-03), which officially gazetted the annual bank holidays and public holidays in the Cocos (Keeling) Islands for the calendar year 2016 and was gazetted in the Proclamation - Special and Bank Holidays 2016 Territory of Cocos (Keeling) Islands (No. 04/2015).

This is the first time in recent memory that such a change is announced (2014-08-21, 2013-09-27, 2012-09-10, 2011-08-22, 2010-08-09, 2009-08-10, and 2008-08-29), as the announcement of the official public holidays dates, in the territory of the Cocos (Keeling) Islands, usually sets definite dates for the following public holidays: Hari Maulad Nabi (Prophet Muhammad's Birthday), Act of Self Determination Day, Hari Raya Puasa, Hari Raya Haji, and Islamic New Year.
