The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government has released its annual official list of the gazetted 2017 public holidays to be observed in Hong Kong ("General holidays for 2017"), in accordance with the Employment Ordinance and General Holidays Ordinance as well as amendments thereto.

As was the case for the past 4 years (2015-05-09, 2014-04-25, 2013-04-19 and 2012-04-29), the aforementioned list of calendar year 2017 Hong Kong public holidays is in line with the 2011 changes in the legislation governing non-working bank holidays and public holidays in the Hong Kong SAR (2011-12-26, 2011-12-15, and 2011-11-10), which stemmed from the review of day in lieu public holidays, announced 6 years ago (2010-02-15) by Hong Kong's Chief Executive, Donald Tsang.

In 2017, contrary to some previous occasions (2014-04-25, 2009-04-25 and 1998-05-13), the Ching Ming and Easter Monday public holidays will not fall on the same date, thus obviating the need for a special treatment of Ching Ming as codified in paragraph 4b) of the amendment to the Cap 57 s 39, Grant of holidays, published in Gazette Number 7 of 2001 (April 12, 2001).

Days in lieu are re-stipulated, as was the case on past occasions (2015-05-09, 2014-04-25, 2013-04-19, 2012-04-29, 2011-05-06, 2010-05-07, 2009-04-25, 2007-04-13, 2006-04-07, 2005-04-15, 2004-04-02, 2003-04-04, 2002-04-12, 2001-04-20, 2000-05-05 and 1999-05-07).
