Jordanian Prime Minister, Hani Al-Mulki, has issued a circular decreeing a non-working public holiday in Jordan on Sunday, October 2, 2016, to commemorate the upcoming annual Jordanian non-working public holiday for the Hijri New Year 1438.

The Jordanian government often (2013-10-31, 2013-04-19, 2013-01-17, 2012-04-24 and 2006-04-25), though not always (2014-10-20), moves mid-week public holidays to the nearest weekend, in particular the Labour Day non-working public holiday and the Hijri New Year public holiday to adjoin a nearby weekend, as was done in 2013, when Jordanian Prime Minister, Abdullah Ensour, decreed a public holiday in Jordan on Thursday, November 7, to commemorate the Hijri New Year 1435, an announcement which represented a 3 day shift in the date of the non-working public holiday for the Hijri New Year 1435 as compared to the list of official non-working public holidays in Jordan for the calendar year 2013 (2013-02-02).

Last year (2015-10-07), the same Jordanian Prime Minister, Abdullah Ensour, decreed a public holiday in Jordan on Thursday, October 15, 2015, for the Hijri New Year 1437, which represented a one-day shift as compared to the list of official non-working public holidays in Jordan for the calendar year 2015, which was announced late the previous year (2014-12-21).

Today's announcement, however, corresponds to the date of the non-working public holiday for the Hijri New Year 1438 as per the list of official non-working public holidays in Jordan for the calendar year 2016, which was announced late last year (2015-10-22).
