Chile's Senate has approved the declaration of the date of the upcoming National Census, on Wednesday, April 19, 2017, as a one-off compulsory public holiday in Chile (feriado irrenunciable), thus making Wednesday, April 19, 2017, an official one-off compulsory public holiday in Chile.
Today's vote follows that of the Labour Commission of Chile's lower house of Parliament (comisión de Trabajo de la Cámara de Diputados), which had, earlier this month (2017-01-05), approved the declaration of the date of the upcoming National Census, on Wednesday, April 19, 2017, as a one-off compulsory public holiday in Chile (feriado irrenunciable).
Fifteen years ago, just before that year's census (2002-04-05 and 2002-02-01), Chile's Parliament passed law 19.790, which makes census day an official non-working public holiday in Chile ("Declara Feriado Legal y Regula los Dias de Realizacion de Censos Oficiales"), but not a compulsory one, meaning that shopping malls, restaurants and supermarkets could still open.
Five years ago (2011-09-15), to avoid having to declare a one-off public holiday, even a not irrenunciable one, the Piñera administration's Census Commission (Comisión Nacional Censal) announced that the 2012 census would not occur on a specific day, but rather over many days and the President of the Chilean National Census Commission, Pablo Longueira, thus decreed that no one-off non-working public holiday would need to be declared in Chile on the occasion of the 2012 census ("el próximo año no se realizará en un día decretado como feriado").
The declaration of Wednesday, April 19, 2017, the date of the upcoming National Census in Chile, as a one-off compulsory public holiday in Chile, is included in the recently-released list of bank holidays and non-working public holidays in Chile for the calendar year 2017 (2016-10-28).
