The President of Paraguay, Horacio Cartes, has signed the "Decreto número 8108" which lists the annual official non-working public holidays in Paraguay for the upcoming calendar year 2018, including which of the annual non-working public holidays of Paraguay will be moved to adjoin a nearby weekend during the calendar year 2018.
The aforementioned decree 8108, (Por el cual se Reglamenta la Ley N° 1723, del 29 de junio de 2001, “Que Autoriza al Poder Ejecutivo a trasladar los feriados nacionales al día lunes”), listing the annual official non-working public holidays in Paraguay for the upcoming calendar year 2018, as well as those of preceding years (2016-11-22, 2015-12-10, 2014-12-18, 2014-12-07, 2014-01-10 and 2013-01-03), is in line with the changes to Paraguay public holidays of 5 years ago (2012-08-03), when Paraguay's President, Federico Franco, issued the Decreto presidencial N° 9393 finally implemented the Ley 1723 del 29 de junio de 2001 (Que Autoriza Al Poder Ejecutivo A Trasladar Los Feriados Nacionales Al Dia Lunes) which gives the president of Paraguay the authority to move any, or all, mid-week public holidays to a nearby Monday (except New Year, Independence Day, día de La Virgen de Caacupé, and Maundy Thursday and Good Friday).
Despite its passage more than 15 years ago (2001-06-29), and regular calls for the executive to avail itself of its prerogative (2010-09-23 and 2008-07-26), the provisions of law 1723/01 had rarely been used before 2012 (2012-07-24).
