Ukrainian President, Petro Poroshenko, has signed into law the draft bill No.5496 changing the list of official annual non-working public holidays in the Ukraine (Article 73 of the Labour Code of the Ukraine).

Today's signing into law of the draft bill No.5496 by Ukrainian President, Petro Poroshenko, thus officializes the recent passage (16-Nov-2017) passage by a vote of 237 in favor in the Ukraine's Verkhovna Rada (unicameral parliament), of the draft bill No.5496 changing the list of official annual non-working public holidays in the Ukraine (Article 73 of the Labour Code of the Ukraine), which, as per the transcript of the plenary meeting released by the Information Department of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Secretariat, "The bill makes December the 25th an official holiday of Ukraine (the Nativity of Christ according to the Gregorian calendar). The bill also kills the 2nd of May as a red-letter day, referring to May the 1st as Labour Day (May Day) only".

Plans had been afoot in the Ukraine to make changes to the list of official annual non-working public holidays in the Ukraine, and remove vestiges of Sovietism.

Earlier this year (28-Mar-2017), the same parliamentary Committee on Social Policy, Employment and Pension Protection of Ukraine's Verkhovna Rada had forwarded a similar draft law on the revision of the Labor Code to the full floor with the recommendation that the annual, May 2, non-working public holiday in the Ukraine.

A couple of months before that (31-Jan-2017), a similar, but more radical, draft law "On public holidays in Ukraine", was submitted by the Institute of National Remembrance of the Ukraine (IPN), whose effect would have been to cancel the March 8 and May 9 annual non-working public holidays of the Ukraine as part of the on-going purging of Soviet-era legacy. That proposal died in committee.

The year before that (01-Jun-2016), the draft law No.4722 "On Amendments to Certain Legislative Acts of Ukraine (regarding the reduction of the number of public holidays and weekends)", which was soon rejected by that same parliamentary Committee on Social Policy, Employment and Pension Protection, would have removed the annual public holidays of May 1, 2 and 9 from the annual list of non-working public holidays of the Ukraine, to be replaced by a new annual non-working public holiday in the Ukraine on May 8, the Day of Remembrance and Reconciliation.

Today's signing into law of the draft bill No.5496 by Ukrainian President, Petro Poroshenko, comes in time to amend the previously-released list of non-working public holidays in the Ukraine for 2017, which was released last November (15-Nov-2016 and 17-Aug-2016), by the Cabinet of Ministers of the Ukraine in the Resolution of 16 November 2016, Number 850 "On transfer of working days in 2017", which specified the official list of 2017 non-working public holidays in the Ukraine, including additional one-off non-working public holidays in the Ukraine. The list of 2018 public holidays in the Ukraine, released last week (21-Nov-2017), will be amended later.
