Germany Amends 2019 and 2020 Berlin Public Holidays

The Governing "Die Linke/Die Grünen" coalition of Germany's city-state of Berlin, has begun the legislative process which, barring any surprises, will make Women's Day on March 8 a new annual non-working public holiday in Germany's city-state of Berlin.

As we reported, last month (21-Nov-2018), for the new, March 8, annual public holiday in Berlin to take effect in 2019, amendments to the state's Law On Sundays And Holidays needed to be tabled no later than the end of the last plenary session before the Christmas break, that is to say, December 13, 2018 , so that it might be passed and gazetted by January 24, 2019, at the latest.

Originally (16-Jul-2018), the Governing Mayor of Germany's city-state of Berlin, Michael Müller, had stated that his preference was for March 18, not March 8, for the new annual public holiday to be declared in Germany's city-state of Berlin. Possibly as a compensatory gesture, May 8, 2020, will be a one-off non-working public holiday in Germany's city-state of Berlin to mark the 75th anniversary of the end of World War Two.
