Nigerian 2019 Democracy Day Public Holiday Amended

Nigerian President, Muhammadu Buhari, has announced that, effective from next year, Nigerian Democracy Day would be marked every June 12 in honor of the acclaimed winner of the June 12, 1993, presidential election, late Chief Moshood Abiola.

Over the years, many Nigerian states have declared June 12 as a regional state public holiday (2017-06-09, 2014-06-10, 2013-06-09, 2012-11-25, 2012-06-09, 2011-06-10, 2010-07-06, 2010-06-11, 2009-06-15, 2009-06-11, 2008-06-11, 2006-06-10).

In the past (2018-05-25, 2017-05-18, 2016-05-25, 2015-05-25, 2014-05-22, 2013-05-24, 2012-04-27, and 2011-05-24), May 29 was declared as a non-working public holiday in Nigeria, corresponding to Democracy Day.
