The Minister of the Interior of Suriname, Mike Noersalim, has announced that the Suriname government had decided to declare Saturday, October 20, 2018, as a one-off non-working public holiday ("consider the day of Saturday 20 October 2018 as a one-off, Sunday-like day") throughout Suriname to commemorate the 165th anniversary of the arrival of indentured Chinese workers.
A decade ago (19-Sep-2008), the government of Suriname had similarly declared Monday, October 20th, 2008, as a one-off non-working public holiday in Suriname to commemorate the 155th anniversary of Chinese immigration to Suriname.
Similar one-off public holidays were also declared in Suriname to commemorate the 140th and 145th anniversary of indentured "Hindustani" workers (21-May-2018 and 02-Jun-2013).
