Mozambique's Minister of Labour (Ministra do Trabalho, Emprego e Segurança Social - MITESS), has announced that it had declared a one-off non-working public sector holidays in Mozambique, on Friday, September 6, 2019, on account of that day's visit to Mozambique by Pope Francis, in Maputo City and Province.

Early last month (2019-08-07), Mozambique's Minister of Labour had announced that it would soon declare a one-off non-working public sector holidays in Mozambique, on Friday, September 6, 2019, on account of that day's visit to Mozambique by Pope Francis.

The declaration of one-off non-working public holidays is a relatively common feature of Mozambique's official public holidays calendar (2019-04-18, 2018-10-09, 2018-06-14, 2016-12-19, 2016-02-26, 2015-12-30, 2015-01-14, 2013-12-21, 2013-08-01, 2012-12-21, 2011-12-05, 2011-10-16, 2010-12-29, 2010-12-23), in particular as Mozambique's Labour Code gives the Minister of Labour the authority to declare one-off public holidays in Mozambique.

Similar public holidays, coinciding with the visit of a Pope, have been declared in the past in Mauritius (2019-06-11 and 2019-04-19), in Latvia (2018-07-06 and 2018-06-23), Chile (2017-03-13 and 2017-11-08), Peru (2017-11-26), Portugal (2017-05-01), Kenya (2015-11-24), to mention only the most recent ones.
