The Office of the President of the Gambia, Adama Barrow, has announced that he had declared Thursday, October 29, 2020, as a public holiday throughout the Gambia in honour of "Maulud-nabi", locally called "Gamo" to commemorate the birth of Prophet Muhammad ("His Excellency, Adama Barrow, President of the Republic of The Gambia has declared, Thursday, 29th October 2020as a public holiday throughout the country in observance of Maulud Nabi, locally called “GAMO” which will be observed on Wednesday night, 28th October 2020.").

The aforementioned announcement that Thursday, October 29, 2020, had been declared as a public holiday throughout the Gambia to commemorate the birth of Prophet Muhammad, is in line with the announcement, a decade ago (2009-09-01), by then President Yaya Jammeh and the Gambian Supreme Islamic Council (SIC), that from then on the dates of Muslim public holidays would be calculated in line with the Umm al-Qura calendar used by Saudi Arabia (which does not observe a public holiday for the Prophet's Birthday).
