Guyana's Vice President and Minister of Public Security, Khemraj Ramjattan, has issued a notification, under the Public Holidays Act, expected to soon be gazetted, which declares Monday, March 2, 2020, the day of the upcoming General and Regional Elections across Guyana, as a one-off public holiday throughout Guyana.

Earlier this month (2020-02-20), Guyana's Minister of Public Security, Khemraj Ramjattan, had stated that he was contemplating the declaration of Monday, March 2, 2020, as a one-off public holiday in Guyana, on account of that day's elections ("I’m considering that (the calls) because I noticed that in 2011 and 2015, I noticed Clement Rohee making it a public holiday. I want to hear the arguments").

But, growing impatient, the Guyana Association of Bankers (GABI) had jumped the gun and announced a half-day bank holiday on March 2 (2020-02-26), while the Guyana Private Sector Commission kept calling on the Government of Guyana to declare Monday, March 2, 2020, a national public holiday in Guyana.

The date of the past 3 general elections in Guyana were declared as one-off non-working public holidays in Guyana (2015-05-04, 2015-01-21, 2011-11-24, 2011-11-23, 2011-10-10 and 2006-08-23), but the date of the most recent local elections was not (2016-03-09).
