Oman's Ministry of Awqaf and Religious Affairs has announced that the Moon of Muharram had not been sighted, last night, and therefore that the first day of Muharram will be on Friday, August 21, 2020.
Earlier this week (2020-08-18), Oman's Minister of Manpower had announced that the non-working public holiday in Oman on the occasion of the upcoming annual Hijri New Year 1442 (Islamic New Year in the calendar year 2020), would be an official non-working public holiday "for employees of private and public sector companies, institutions and establishments under the provisions of the Labour Law".
The Ministry of Manpower and the Ministry of Civil Service had, at the time, stated that "If Muharram 1442 falls on Friday, August 21, the official holiday will be on Sunday, August 23 and the confirmation of the crescent of the month of Muharram will be announced by the competent authorities".
