The Peruvian Prime Minister, Violeta Bermudez, has announced that Thursday, December 24, 2020, would be a compensatory non-working public holiday in Peru ("there is no need to go to work and everyone can stay home waiting for Christmas").
As regards the public holiday status of December 31, 2020, the Chief of Cabinet stated that "New Year's Eve has not been considered this time since a previous rule had already declared December 31 a compensatory non-working day, while January 1 is a holiday", which is in fact the case, as December 31 is one of the additional Peruvian public holidays contained in the list of 2020 public holidays, as contained in the Decreto Supremo Nº 197-2019-PCM, gazetted by the Peruvian government, late last year (2019-12-21).
That list of additional public holidays had been decimated over the year, as Peruvian president, Martín Vizcarra, canceled the public holidays scheduled for July 27 and 29, 2020, last summer (2020-07-11 and 2020-07-03), and then canceled the October 8 and 9, 2020, public holidays, in the early autumn (2020-10-01 and 2020-09-30).
A later promise (2020-10-03) by the Peruvian Defense Minister, Jorge Chávez Cresta, that the cancellation of the October 8 and 9, 2020, public holidays, would be the last one this year ("Será la última modificación que se hará en el año en cuanto a los feriados. En adelante, los feriados serán respetados como tal."), seems to have been forgotten along the way.
