Dominican Republic Declares August 16 Public Holiday

The Ministry of Labour of the Dominican Republic has issued a communiqué announcing that, as per the current public holidays legislation, Monday, August 16, 2021, would be a non-working public holiday in the Dominican Republic on account of the upcoming Día de la Restauración.

The aforementioned announcement that Monday, August 16, 2021, would be the date of the upcoming Día de la Restauración non-working public holiday of the Dominican Republic, is in line with last autumn's official listing of public holidays in the Dominican Republic for the year 2021 (2020-11-20), and the current public holidays legislation of the Dominican Republic (1997-06-19), namely law 139-97.

Articles 1-2-4 of law 139-97 (1997-06-19), used to move the August 16 public holiday depending on the weekday on which it fell. But this was declared unconstitutional by the Dominican Republic's Supreme Court, more than a decade ago (2008-02-21).

As the ruling only began to have a concrete effect three years later (2013-08-09, 2012-06-14 and 2011-08-14), official reminders from the Ministry of Labour of the Dominican Republic are now a yearly staple of news in the Dominican Republic (2019-08-13, 2018-08-13, 2017-08-09, 2016-08-15, 2014-08-14, 2013-08-09, 2012-06-14, 2011-08-14).
