The Government of Guatemala has confirmed that the upcoming Independence Day public holiday would be observed on its historical date, namely Wednesday, September 15, 2021, and would not be moved to adjoin a nearby weekend.
The September 15, Independence Day, public holiday of Guatemala is not covered by the Decreto 19-2018 which mandates that the May 1st, June 30th and October 20th, annual public holidays, when falling on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays or Sundays, should be moved to the working day immediately before or after the weekend (2018-10-11 and 2018-09-26).
Last year, there had been some attempts by the executive director of the Guatemalan Chamber of Tourism, Nancy Mejía, to have the September 15 public holiday moved to September 14, and later to have September 14 declared as a one-off bridge public holiday. But in the end the 2020 Independence Day public holiday was also observed on September 15 (2020-08-27).
The observance of the upcoming Independence Day public holiday of Guatemala on Wednesday, September 15, 2021, is in line with the list of 2021 Guatemala public holidays, announced last autumn (2020-11-13).
