The Bank of Japan (Japan's central bank) and the Government of Japan have released the annual list of official national holidays, public holidays and bank holidays in Japan for the calendar year 2022.

Recall that the 2020 Japanese public holidays were modified 3 times to accommodate the 2020 Tokyo Olympics (2019-06-17, 2019-04-17, 2018-06-13, 2018-04-07, 2017-12-06, 2017-10-03, 2017-08-22).

The subsequent list of 2021 bank holidays and public holidays in Japan were released a year ago (2020-02-08), before the Covid-19 pandemic eventually forced the postponement of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics (2020-03-26).

The postponement of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics led to a similar rearrangement of the 2021 public holidays of Japan (2020-12-04, 2020-11-27, 2020-06-10, 2020-05-27 and 2020-05-20).

For 2022, the announced list of Japanese bank holidays and public holidays is back to the usual routine whereby, apart from the year-end banks-only holidays, the announcement of annual public holidays in Japan followed the list of official Japanese non-working public holidays as amended over the last decade (2005-05-15, 2001-06-22 and 1998-10-23).

The Bank of Japan's announcement of the list 0f 2022 banks holidays specifies that "The Bank's offices in Japan -- Head Office, branches, and local offices -- are closed on Saturdays, Sundays, and the following days: National holidays (as defined in Act No. 178 of 1948) and December 31 to January 3.", as usual (2020-02-08, 2018-01-06, 2017-01-08, 2016-01-10, 2015-01-11, 2014-01-09, 2013-03-01, 2012-05-14 and 2011-11-25).
