The Maldives President’s Office has announced that President Ibrahim Mohamed Salih had declared Thursday, February 4, 2021, as a one-off non-working public holiday in the Maldives, on account of the opening ceremony of parliament's new term for the calendar year 2021, at which President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih is scheduled to deliver an address.
Former Maldives Presidents had declared one-off non-working public holidays on the date of the first sitting of the People's Majlis of the year, for many years (2015-02-28, 2013-02-25, 2012-02-22, 2011-02-22, 2010-02-22 and 2009-03-02), with some exceptions (2014-02-28), as Article 84 of the Maldives constitution states that "at the beginning of the first session of each year at the first sitting, the President shall address the People’s Majlis on the state of the country, and may present proposals for improving the state of the country to the People’s Majlis".
The practice was reintroduced, 2 years ago (2019-01-21), when President Ibrahim Mohamed Salih declared Thursday, February 7, 2019, a one-off non-working public holiday in the Maldives, on account of the day of the formal inauguration of the Parliament for the year 2019, and did the same last year (2020-01-06).
