Sabah To Gazette August 31 As Sabah Day Public Holiday

Sabah Deputy Chief Minister, Jeffrey Kitingan, has announced that his party was preparing to gazette August 31 as Sabah Day, a public holiday distinct from the nationally-observed August 31 public holiday marking Malaysia's National Day ("Sabah Day, a day to commemorate Sabah’s independence, could be observed for the first time next year").

Preempting the argument that August 31 is already a public holiday throughout Malaysia, Deputy Chief Minister Kitingan stated that "We want to recognize the date as Sabah Day to celebrate our independence, not just National Day which celebrates the peninsula’s independence." and, referring to the fact that neighboring Sarawak state observes July 22 as Sarawak Independence Day (2016-05-26, 2016-04-23, 2016-03-20 and 2016-02-13), went on to clarify that "In other words, we want what Sarawak has".
