The new Minister of the Interior of Suriname, Bronto Somohardjo, has been quoted as stating that it wouldn't be a bad idea to cancel the February 25, annual public holiday observed in Suriname ("We should not be able to celebrate this").

February 25 was a public holiday in Suriname from 1981 to 1987.

Then, a decade ago, the Council of Ministers of Suriname declared February 25 as a public holiday again, beginning in 2011 (2011-02-06 and 2011-01-27).
