The Ministry of Labour of the Dominican Republic has issued a communiqué announcing that, as per the current legislation on public sector holidays in the Dominican Republic, the upcoming Labor Day public holiday would be moved from Sunday, May 1st, to Monday, May 2nd, 2022.
The aforementioned announcement that the upcoming Día del Trabajo public holiday would be observed on Monday, May 2, 2022, is in line with the previously-released listing of official public holidays in the Dominican Republic for the year 2022 (2021-10-28), and the current public holidays legislation (1997-06-19), namely law 139-97.
Law No. 139-97, dated June 19, 1997, which transfers public holidays that coincide with Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday or Friday, to Monday, was published in Official Gazette No. 9957, dated June 25, 1997, and it came into force on the June 27 of the same year (1997-06-19).
Attempts to amend the Ley No. 139-97 have been numerous, and have in some cases progressed far, adding Easter Monday as a new annual non-working public holidays in the Dominican Republic (2013-04-01), and trying to fix back to their set dates the January 6 and 26 annual non-working public holidays in the Dominican Republic (2016-10-18, 2014-12-02 and 2013-07-27), but never made it to final ratification.
