Panama's President, Laurentino Cortizo, has issued the Executive Decree No. 5 which declares Monday, February 28, 2022, as a public sector holiday ("se ordena el cierre en el país de las oficinas públicas nacionales y municipales este 28 de febrero de 2022").
The aforementioned Executive Decree No. 5, in its preamble, states that "Tuesday, March 1, is a day off by legal mandate; however, the foregoing does not constitute an obstacle for the movement of people towards recreation and leisure areas".
This preamble is important as Panama's National Assembly has been considering House Bill 759 which would transfer the Carnival Tuesday public holiday of 2022, to the preceding Monday (2022-02-10 and 2022-02-04), as the festivities for the 2022 Carnival in Panama have been canceled.
The 2021 Carnival was also canceled (2021-01-30) and at that time the Panamanian Ministry of Health announced that the only public holiday would be Tuesday, February 16, 2021, with Carnival Monday and Ash Wednesday being normal working days in 2021 ("el lunes 15 será un día normal de trabajo y y el miércoles 17 de Cenizas será un día con jornada laboral regular").
