The government of Timor Leste has announced that it had decided to grant an additional day-off public sector holiday in Timor Leste on Friday, March 18, 2022, "due to the first round of the Presidential Election".

The aforementioned announcement ("Toleránsia pontu iha loron 18 fulan-marsu tinan 2022") states that "The Government has decided to grant day off on the 18th March, to all the employees and agents of the ministries or their dependent services, as well as the institutes and integrated indirect State administration bodies, due to the first round of the Presidential Election."

The announcement then goes on on to justify this additional public sector holiday in the following manner "Taking into account that many of the voters are registered in their municipality of origin which is not, in many cases, the location where they reside, they are required to travel to exercise their right and political duty and then return to their place of residence.".

Earlier this year (2022-01-26), the government of Timor Leste had released the calendar for the 2022 Presidential election, and though Law No.10/2005, which overhauled Timor Leste's public holidays (2005-08-12), does not specify that the dates of elections should be public holidays, recent presidential elections were public holidays in Timor Leste (2017-07-18, 2017-03-14, 2012-04-11 and 2012-03-15), as were parliamentary elections (2012-07-07 and 2012-07-03), with some exceptions (2007-02-04).
