Recent News and Updates

18 May 2001 (The Island Sun) A committee was given the mandate by BVI Executive Council to review each of the holidays currently being observed, with a view to making changes. Recommendations include the replacement of March's Commonwealth Day by a new holiday in November, the renaming of Territory Day to Virgin Islands Day and of August Festival Days to Emancipation Days. Tweaks to the calculation methods (replacing fixed-dates by the 1st, 2nd or 3rd Monday of a month) and allowed store opening hours (particularly in days 2 and 3 of the August Festival) were also recommended.  26 Oct 2000 (The Island Sun) The "Public Holidays Amendment Act" had its first reading this week. It will make the Monday nearest to the birth date of the first Chief Minister, Hon. H. L. Stoutt a new annual public holiday, and at the same time it will remove "the birthday of the Heir to the Throne" from the existing list of public holidays in the British Virgin Islands.  More News Updates For up-to-the-minute news about public holidays trends and changes, visit our public holidays news and updates pages, or subscribe to one of our free email newsletters.

Background Information

Governing Law: The list and dates of official public holidays in the British Virgin Islands are regulated by the Public Holidays Act, Chapter 199, as amended by The Public Holidays Amendment Act (2000).  Weekend Public Holidays: Public holidays that occur on a weekend are usually moved to the following Monday.  Territory Day: This holiday originated in 1956 when the Federation of the Leeward Islands, created in 1872, was dissolved. The holiday began to be called "Territory Day", although it was not until 1978 that this name was substituted for "Colony Day" in the Schedule to the Public Holidays Act. In 2001, the BVI Public Holidays Review Committee did propose renaming theis public holiday as "Virgin Islands Day", but as of June 2008, this change was not implemented.  Other Sources of Information For information not covered here, see the following specialized websites: ASI Hot Spots (security-related world events: terrorist threats, political strife, strikes, criminal activity, aviation incidents and health outbreaks), CIA World Factbook (maps, demographic and economic statistics), Copp Clark (financial markets' trading hours, settlement holidays and currency non-clearing days), and the IFES Election Guide (information covering upcoming elections, referenda, electoral structures and past voter participation).
