Background Information

Governing Law: Official public holidays in Liechtenstein are regulated by Sections 18-(2) of the Labour Act of 29 Dec. 1966, as amended in 1969 (Liechtensteinisches Landesgesetzblatt, 1970-02-11), in 1982 (Order to amend the Order respecting Sunday rest and public holidays and opening hours and closing times of shops; Liechtensteinisches Landesgesetzblatt, 1982-12-30), and 1987 (Order of 9 June 1987 amending the Order under the Unemployment Insurance Act [LGBl. 1969 No. 41]; Liechtensteinisches Landesgesetzblatt, 1987-07-09, No. 23, p. 1-2).  Weekend Public Holidays: Public holidays that occur on a weekend remain on that date (ie. they are not moved to another date, such as the following Monday, for example).  Saint Berchtolds' Day (January 2) was made a bank holiday in Liechtenstein beginning in 1978.  Liechtenstein International Codes LI and LIE (2 and 3-letter ISO3166 codes) and .li (ICANN national top-level internet domain). • Other Sources of Information The following specialized websites are also a good source of Liechtenstein information and news: ASI Hot Spots (security-related world events: terrorist threats, political strife, strikes, criminal activity, aviation incidents and health outbreaks), CIA World Factbook (Liechtenstein maps, demographics and economic statistics), the IFES (information covering upcoming elections, referenda, electoral structures and voter participation in Liechtenstein), and Wikipedia (includes Liechtenstein commemorative dates that are not necessarily public holidays).
