Recent News and Updates

11 Apr 2010 (Pressan-Reykjavik) The supreme court judge who chairs the commission of inquiry into the 2008 banking meltdown in Iceland, Pall Hreinsson, has suggested that the country should declare a one-off public holiday so that all Icelanders have time to read the commission's report.  More News Updates For the full version of the summarized news items above, and older news items not displayed above, go to the Iceland public holidays news and updates page, or worldwide public holidays news and updates page, or subscribe to one of our free email newsletters.

Background Information

Governing Law: Official public holidays in Iceland are regulated by the Act No. 88 of 1971 on a forty hour working week (Lagasafn, 1991, Ministry of Justice, Reykjavik, Iceland, Vol. I, pp. 618-619) which lists the full-day and half-day public holidays of Iceland. This act was amended in 1982, by the Act No. 94 of 1982 to amend Act No. 88 of 1971 on forty-hour working week (Lagasafn, 1991, Ministry of Justice, Reykjavik, Iceland, Vol. I, p. 618) which added a new annual public holiday in August.  Weekend Public Holidays: Public holidays that occur on a weekend remain on that date (ie. they are not moved to another date, such as the following Monday, for example).  However, The Central Bank of Iceland did close on the first Monday in January in 2005 and 2006, when New Year's Day did fall on a weekend. Other banks were open .  Marine Day is celebrated on the first Sunday in June during the Festival of the Sea.  Sovereignty Day (December 1): marks the 1918 Act of Union when Denmark recognised Iceland as a fully sovereign state, but it is not a public holiday.  Iceland International Codes IS and ISL (2 and 3-letter ISO3166 codes) and .is (ICANN national top-level internet domain). • Other Sources of Information The following specialized websites are also a good source of Iceland information and news: Central Bank of Iceland (Iceland central bank), ASI Hot Spots (security-related world events: terrorist threats, political strife, strikes, criminal activity, aviation incidents and health outbreaks), CIA World Factbook (Iceland maps, demographics and economic statistics), the IFES (information covering upcoming elections, referenda, electoral structures and voter participation in Iceland), and Wikipedia (includes Iceland commemorative dates that are not necessarily public holidays).
