Originally designated as “Colony Day”, it began to be termed “Territory Day” in the 1960s when the word “colony” fell into disfavour. The term “Territory Day” was officially substituted for “Colony Day” in the Schedule to the Public Holidays Act in 1978. In 2001, the BVI Public Holidays Review Committee did propose renaming this public holiday as "Virgin Islands Day", but as of June 2009, this change was not implemented.
