Their occurrences are regulated by law 16.805 of 1996, as modified ultimately by law 17.414 of 2001. In 2001, attempts were made to keep patriotic holidays on their original date, regardless of the day of the week on which they occurred, but nothing has come of it. • Feriados laborables and feriados no laborables: In principle, in Uruguay, there is a distinction between non-working and working holidays. The non-working holidays are: January 1, May 1, July 18, August 25, and December 25. However on the other days listed here, most businesses and shops are closed anyways, the only exception seeming to be November 2 which seems limited to banks and the financial sector. • Semana Santa: the week before Easter, Holy Week, is colloquially called Semana de Turismo (tourism week) as it is often used to travel within Uruguay to visit family. • Although the October 12 public holiday is sometimes called Día de la Raza, as in most of Latin America, in the case of Uruguay, it is probably more accurate to call it Batalla de Sarandí in commemoration of the 1825 battle of Sarandí. This preference is supported by the legislative decree 14.977 which classifies October 12th as one of the 6 feriados nacionales de exaltación y conmemoración patriótica . • At the end of 2006, the date of June 19: was officialized as Día del Nunca Más (Day of Never Again) by President Tabaré Vázquez to mark the memory of the military repression from 1973-1985. This new public holiday will coincide with the anniversary holiday of the birth of José Gervasio Artigas (1764-1850), often called the Father of Uruguay .
