Mali's Parliament Approves New Public Holidays Law

By a vote of 112 for, 0 against, and 1 abstention, Mali's National Assembly approved the new law on public holidays (Projet de loi relatif aux fêtes légales en République du Mali).

The goal of this law, presented by the Minister for the Civil Service (Ministre de la Fonction publique de la Réforme de l'Etat et des Relations avec les Institutions), was to regroup into a single text all the various directives concerning public holidays in Mali.

It also puts an end to the controversies regarding the status of Easter Monday and of the, extremely rare, public holiday observed on the occasion of the Baptism of the Prophet.

Finally, despite recent calls to declare as public holidays, the day after Muslim public holidays (25-Feb-2003), the Projet de loi relatif aux fêtes légales en République du Mali only includes a one-day public holiday for each Muslim public holiday in Mali.
