President Bachelet signed into law, bill 20.215 which makes Monday, September 17, 2007, a one-off bridge public holiday in Chile.
As per this amendment law, the Labour code of Chile is amended by adding a 3rd sub-paragraph to Article 35, automatically making September 17 a public holiday when it falls on a Monday, and automatically making September 20 a public holiday when it falls on a Friday.
The bill, which also extends the interdiction of opening to all stores on January 1, May 1, September 18, and December 25, was approved by the Senate late last month (28-Aug-2007).
The opening hours amendment was originally introduced as separate legislation (12-Apr-2007) and extends the 2003, Labour Code amendment to Article 35 which included May 1st as an annual public holiday, "Día Nacional del Trabajo".
