We have received reports that the date of Bangladesh' upcoming ninth parliamentary elections, December 29, 2008, has been confirmed as a public holiday "to enable all to cast their vote amid a holiday mood".
The December 29 elections, postponed from December 18 (21-Nov-2008), were listed as a tentative public holiday since they were announced in October (02-Oct-2008).
The government also declared Jan. 12, 2009, public holiday, in one constituency, in the country's southeastern Noakhali district, as the election there was postponed due to the death of one of the candidates.
