The Executive Director of the Australian State of New South Wales (NSW) Industrial Relations, Don Jones, has confirmed that Monday, December 28, has been gazetted as the 2009 Boxing Day public holiday.
This announcement mirrors a similar announcement by Australia's State of Queensland, last summer (28-Aug-2009).
In principle, such one-off announcements will be a thing of the past, in NSW, if and when the review into public holidays that fall on a weekend, commissioned last spring (31-May-2009) by Australia's New South Wales Industrial Relations Minister, John Hatzistergos, is implemented. A preliminary report was released this past summer (18-Aug-2009), and the final report is expected later this month.
In addition, it should be noted that, as per recent NSW legislation (12-Sep-2009), most shops are now banned from opening on public holidays.
