Azerbaijan Considering Flag Day Public Holiday

(Posted on Tuesday, November 17, 2009)

The Chairman of Azerbaijan's Social Policy Committee of the Milli Majlis (Parliament), Hadi Rajabli, has announced that, after consideration, his committee has recommended to the plenary session of the parliament, a "draft law on amendments to the Labor Code", making Flag Day a public holiday.

One of the draft law's proposals would be to declare November 9 as National Flag Day, a new annual non-working public holiday. Earlier this year (28-Apr-2009), Chairman Rajabli's committee had rejected a bill proposing to make May 1st, an annual non-working public holiday.

As an interesting aside, neighboring Tajikistan recently passed a law making its November 24th, National Flag Day, a new annual national holiday (12-Nov-2009). But in the case of Tajikistan, this will be a regular working day.
