A group of Chilean parliamentarians from the UDI, PPD, as well as some independents, has introduced legislation that would make Friday, September 17, and Monday, September 20, 2010, one-off public holidays.
At the origin of this proposed legislation, contained in the Boletín 6483-17, is the fact that, in 2010, Chile will be celebrating its bicentennial, and that that year's 2-day annual fiestas patrias (September 18-19) falls on a Saturday and a Sunday.
Normally, Chilean public holidays that fall on a weekend are "lost" (ie. no day in lieu public holiday is given), but the September 18-19 double public holiday has been the source of legislative tinkering in the past (12-Sep-2007).
On the occasion of Chile's centenary, in 1910, a similar bill was approved, declaring a 7-day period of public holidays, from September 16-22, instead of the 3-day period (18-20) that was customary back then.
The bill has now moved to the "Comisión de la Cultura y de las Artes" for consideration.
